RSES Adds Four More Technical Sessions to 2009 Conference Program.

Four more technical sessions have been added to the educational program during the 72nd Annual Conference at the Hilton Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport Mall of America hotel in Bloomington, Minn. on Oct. 27-31, 2009. The conference will focus on education as well as many industry-related topics and the theme will be, “Lean & Green.” The RSES Twin Cities Chapter will host the conference.

The four new technical sessions include:

“Times are Changing – Have Your Service Techniques Kept Pace?” and “Indoor Air Quality – The AC Unit is the Problem and the Solution – So Where are You?” will be led Robert P. Scaringe, Ph.D., P.E., of Mainstream Engineering Corp. These two sessions will be taught consecutively on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., with a 15 minute break between sessions, and will cater to an intermediate- to advanced-level audience.

Specifically, “Times are Changing – Have Your Service Techniques Kept Pace?” is ideal for those who are involved in converting hydrochlorofluorocarbon systems to hydrofluorocarbon systems and will focus on differences in acid and moisture problems in HFC systems compared to HCFC systems. Scaringe will cover differences in preventative maintenance procedures between systems and will detail the distinct difference in acid/moisture detection/remediation and evacuation required for newer HFC systems. Also, Scaringe will discuss why proper system flushing is critical.

In addition, “Indoor Air Quality – The AC Unit is the Problem and the Solution – So Where are You?” will cover how the air inside of buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air and that heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems are the primary cause associated with indoor air quality. Scaringe will stress the importance of having properly trained HVAC technicians and provide an introduction to IAQ service techniques and green service practices that can be directly incorporated into service and maintenance procedures to generate additional revenue while better servicing clients.

“New EPA Regulations Preventing the Sale of R-22 Systems and How It Affects the Contractor,” will be led by Al Maier of Emerson Climate Technologies, Flow Controls Division. This two-hour session will target an intermediate- to advanced-level audience. Attendees will learn how this new Environmental Protection Agency law will impact their business starting Jan. 1, 2010 and the availability to use R-22 for their servicing needs. In addition, with R-410A becoming the dominant refrigerant for residential air conditioning equipment, Maier will review the differences between R-410A and R-22 and will focus on how to choose the proper components to use with R-410A systems including filter-driers, expansion valves and solenoids.

“Universal Time, Refrigeration and Energy Controls,” will be led by Peter R. Greisinger, CPMR, of Intermatic Inc. This two-hour session will target a beginner-level audience. Greisinger will detail defrost – time and energy controls in our world of green, while specifically discussing the following: why it’s important to defrost; defrost methods; defrost control types; Intermatic’s Grasslin Brand DTMV40 multi-voltage defrost timer; and their GM40 electromechanical time switch; plus various other timers and energy savings controls. In addition, a question and answer discussion will be held at the end of the session.
